Canon again named a Leader in IDC MarketScape print sustainability assessment

Canon says it was placed in the Leaders category of IDC MarketScape’s 2026 print sustainability assessment, which evaluated 11 printer and copier suppliers.

A second Leaders placement

Canon again named a Leader in IDC MarketScape print sustainability assessment

Canon has announced its placement in the Leaders category of the IDC MarketScape Worldwide Sustainability Programs and Services Hardcopy 2026 Vendor Assessment. The company says it received the designation for a second time following the initial assessment in 2023.

The research considered the capabilities and strategies of 11 printer and copier suppliers operating internationally. Canon highlights the report’s discussion of an integrated, technology-led sustainability approach spanning recycling, remanufacturing and digital optimisation.

A lifecycle approach to materials and emissions

Canon says its work to increase recycled-material use and reduce carbon emissions and waste extends across the product lifecycle. The stages identified in the announcement include raw-material sourcing, manufacturing, distribution, use, maintenance and end-of-life treatment.

The company remanufactures multifunction printers at facilities in Japan and Germany. It says at least 90% of the components used in those remanufactured products come from used devices, while the finished products are intended to meet the quality and performance standards of new equipment. Canon also reports extending remanufacturing activities to the United States in April 2026.

Toner-cartridge collection across 24 countries

Canon’s toner-cartridge recycling programme began in 1990. The announcement says used cartridges are collected in 24 countries, with recovered plastics processed at facilities in China, France, Japan and the United States.

The recovered material is reprocessed for use in new toner cartridges. Canon presents this as part of its effort to retain materials within the production cycle while reducing the need for new resources.

Progress against lifecycle carbon objectives

Canon reports an average annual reduction of 3.59% in lifecycle carbon emissions per product through 2025, producing a cumulative reduction of 45.5% against its programme baseline. Its stated long-term objective is net-zero carbon emissions across product lifecycles by 2050.

The announcement connects the IDC placement with those materials, remanufacturing and carbon programmes. The designation is an assessment category rather than a ranking that declares one supplier the sole winner.
