DE-CIX records 21.47 Tbit/s in Frankfurt and 32.10 Tbit/s across its global exchanges
DE-CIX says peak traffic reached 21.47 Tbit/s at its Frankfurt exchange and a combined 32.10 Tbit/s across its own exchanges worldwide.
New peaks just 25 days after the previous records

DE-CIX has announced new peak traffic records at its Frankfurt internet exchange and across its international network of exchanges. Frankfurt reached 21.47 terabits per second, while the combined peak across the operator’s exchanges worldwide reached 32.10 terabits per second.
The records followed the previous highs by only 25 days. Those earlier peaks, recorded on 18 September, were 20.02 Tbit/s in Frankfurt and about 30 Tbit/s globally. DE-CIX says the latest figures represent an increase of roughly seven per cent. The measurements concern traffic exchanged through DE-CIX infrastructure, rather than the total amount of internet traffic everywhere in the world.
Football streaming coincided with the surge
The latest peaks coincided with several UEFA Champions League matches being played at the same time. As viewers followed games through live-streaming services, traffic rose at the Frankfurt exchange and across the operator’s other locations.
The reported peak occurred at approximately 22:20 in Türkiye, around 20 minutes after kick-off. The company links the timing to demand for live video, while also pointing to the wider growth in digital services that rely on high-capacity interconnection.
What an internet exchange does
Internet exchanges provide a place where different networks can exchange data directly. Participants can include telecommunications operators, cloud providers, content platforms and businesses. Direct interconnection helps networks route traffic efficiently as demand changes.
The traffic figure is an aggregate measure through an exchange. It is not a speed available to an individual home broadband subscriber and should not be interpreted as a new personal download-speed offer. Its significance lies in the volume of simultaneous connections supported by shared internet infrastructure.
Long-term growth in Frankfurt
DE-CIX says peak traffic in Frankfurt has grown by approximately 160 per cent since the beginning of 2020. The location serves as an important digital hub for Europe and connects around 1,100 networks. In 2025, its annual data volume exceeded 48 exabytes.
Founded in 1995, DE-CIX operates at more than 60 locations across Europe, Africa, the Americas, the Middle East and Asia. Its network brings together more than 4,600 networks from over 100 countries. The company presents the new records as evidence of the continuing need to expand reliable, high-capacity interconnection as online activity grows.
