Artificial intelligence is one of our most powerful defense tools against fraud

Binance Crime Investigations Expert Caner Akyürek:

“Artificial Intelligence Is One of Our Most Powerful Defenses Against Fraud”

Caner Akyürek, Crime Investigations Expert at Binance, notes that artificial intelligence has made fraudulent schemes faster and more accessible, emphasizing the importance of combining AI-powered security systems with human expertise to combat this threat.

While artificial intelligence makes it easier to create fake content, it is also playing an increasingly important role in combating digital fraud. Assessing AI-powered fraud methods and the measures that can be taken against them, Binance Crime Investigations Expert Caner Akyürek stated that risk systems capable of analyzing large volumes of transactions in real time must be supported by expert assessments.

Fake identity documents, payment receipts, cloned voices, and personalized scam messages can now be generated in seconds. According to Chainalysis’s 2026 Crypto Crime Report, the amount of crypto assets sent to scams involving the impersonation of individuals or organizations increased by more than 1,400% in 2025 compared with the previous year. The report also reveals that scam operations with on-chain links to AI tool providers generate approximately 4.5 times more revenue on average than operations for which no such links have been identified.

Akyürek said: “Digital assets have become part of the everyday financial lives of millions of people. Fake ‘support representative’ messages sent via WhatsApp and fraudulent ‘investment advisors’ who spend weeks building trust are real threats our users face every day. The good news is that the same technology is now one of our most powerful defensive tools.”

AI Against AI

AI-powered risk systems used by crypto asset platforms operating globally helped protect more than 8 million users and prevent approximately $4.6 billion in potential losses during the first half of 2026. During the same period, more than 42,000 malicious addresses were blacklisted, and over 14,000 real-time alerts were sent to users every day. AI now supports between 80% and 90% of real-time risk decisions on major platforms.

This layered architecture, consisting of more than 100 models operating simultaneously, can detect fake payment screenshots and fraudulent scenarios that appear flawless to the human eye. In identity verification, AI-assisted screening also delivers up to 100 times greater efficiency than manual processes in detecting deepfakes and synthetic face techniques.

Akyürek also emphasized the importance of the human factor: “AI provides scale, but humans make the final decisions in complex cases that require context and judgment. Since automated decisions affect real people, models must be continuously tested for bias and accuracy. Speed matters, but fairness and explainability are just as important.”

Recommendations for Users

Akyürek recommends that crypto asset investors take the following precautions:

  • Enable multi-factor authentication and passkeys.
  • Be cautious of people who contact you first and try to create a sense of urgency.
  • Never share your verification codes with anyone.
  • Be skeptical of offers that seem too good to be true.
