Nikon’s 120–300mm f/2.8 sports zoom reaches 420mm with a built-in teleconverter

Nikon announced the NIKKOR Z 120–300mm f/2.8 TC VR S on 29 October 2026, following its development announcement in May. Designed for professional sports photography, the full-frame Z-mount zoom combines a constant f/2.8 maximum aperture with a built-in 1.4x teleconverter. Flicking a switch changes its range to 168–420mm at f/4, without removing the lens.

Extra reach, with a clear trade-off

Athletes rarely stay at a convenient distance. The native zoom range covers changing action nearby, while the converter extends reach for more distant subjects. It costs one stop of light, however: this is not a 420mm f/2.8 lens. That distinction matters when selecting shutter speed and ISO under stadium or indoor lighting.

Nikon describes it as the first interchangeable zoom combining a constant f/2.8 maximum aperture with an integrated teleconverter. This claim is based on the company’s market research as of 29 October, rather than an independent performance test.

Autofocus and stabilisation

Silky Swift VCM motors handle autofocus. Meso Amorphous and ARNEO coatings aim to reduce flare and ghosting around strong light sources. The advertised 6.5-stop vibration-reduction figure requires a Synchro VR-compatible camera. Nikon measured it on a Z6III, at the telephoto end in Normal mode, without the converter engaged, under the CIPA 2024 standard.

Stabilisation compensates for camera movement; it does not freeze a running athlete. An appropriate shutter speed therefore remains essential. The practical benefit of the built-in converter is a faster change of framing, not a replacement for exposure decisions.

Handling on location

The lens weighs approximately 2,735g, around 515g less than Nikon’s 2020 F-mount 120–300mm f/2.8. Internal zooming and focusing keep its external length unchanged. A magnesium-alloy construction, sealing and a fluorine-coated front element address field use, although Nikon does not guarantee protection against dust and moisture in every situation.

The tripod collar supports screw-type Arca-Swiss clamps; Nikon cautions against lever-type clamps that may not hold it securely. Filter options include 112mm screw-in front filters and a 46mm rear slip-in holder. The supplied accessories include the HB-120 hood, front and rear caps, strap and case.

Optics and controls

There are 30 elements in 24 groups, including the converter, and nine rounded diaphragm blades. Minimum focusing distance changes from 0.98m at 120mm to 2m at 300mm; engaging the converter does not change those distances. A customisable control ring, two L-Fn buttons and an Fn ring provide direct operation, while Memory Set recalls a stored focus position.

Release dates and regional pricing

Nikon Canada lists availability in mid-November and a suggested price of CAD 19,999.95. Nikon Ireland lists €16,499 and a shipping date of 12 November 2026. These are regional offers, not confirmed Turkish prices or availability. The sources reviewed do not establish a Turkish launch date.
